Myanmar Military Airstrikes in January Kill 170 Across 40 Cities

 Yangon, Myanmar (February 2025):

The Myanmar military junta launched a series of devastating airstrikes across 40 cities in January, resulting in at least 170 civilian casualties and leaving hundreds injured. The ongoing conflict in Myanmar has escalated tensions and raised international concerns about human rights violations.

The airstrikes targeted several key regions, including Kayah, Chin, and Sagaing, where ethnic armed groups have been resisting the military’s control. Witnesses reported extensive damage to residential areas, schools, and religious buildings. The majority of the victims were civilians, including women and children.

International Response and Growing Concerns

The United Nations and human rights organizations have condemned the attacks, urging Myanmar’s military to end its brutal crackdown on civilians. UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep concern and called for an immediate ceasefire.

Humanitarian agencies operating in the region are struggling to provide aid due to restricted access and ongoing violence. The latest attacks are part of a broader campaign by the junta to crush opposition forces since the February 2021 coup.

Escalation of the Crisis

The recent airstrikes have added to the growing list of atrocities committed by the junta, worsening the humanitarian crisis in the country. Over 1.5 million people have been displaced, and thousands have fled to neighboring countries for safety. The conflict shows no signs of resolution as both sides refuse to engage in peace talks.
